Steve's Tips

Great gardens begin with healthy soil.  The key component to healthy soil is organic matter. A good way to create organic matter is to compost your organic waste from the household.  This can include items from both the kitchen and the yard.  Create a space in the yard and remember that this may draw critters from time to time.  As these products break down move the newly created compost to the gardens.  Keep the pile moving by turning the pile, this will hasten break down.  If it smells throw a little limestone on it this will knock the odor down.  If composting seems a little daunting there are many great bagged products on the market that will serve the same purpose.  Bulk organic products are also available, we use composted manure that we can deliver by the yard, call or e-mail for pricing and availability.

April is a great time to clean up your patio containers and add some evergreens, pansies, etc.  I know your dying for some spring color!

Tip of the Month: Magnolias, many are magnificent in April, these specimens like peat (organic matter) spread around the base of the plant to maintain an acid environment which is required for success.  Magnolias also often suffer from magnesium deficiency, an annual application of Epsom salts or other product containing magnesium will be beneficial.

Now, get out there and get dirty!
